Motivational Pit Stops

When we’re gazing across the expanse from where we are to where we want to go, the distance can seem long and sometimes it’s hard to maintain our motivation over the long run. There are a few motivational pit stops you can make along the way for a quick recharge.

Create short term achievable goals
You’ll often hear you should have goals that are so big they make people laugh when they hear about them. Huge goals are great for giving you something to strive for – as the saying goes, Shoot for the moon, even if you miss you’ll land among the stars. However if you’re having trouble seeing your final destination at the end of a long road ahead, then short term, achievable goals are just the thing to keep you motivated. Successful completion of short term goals, always makes the long term ones seem a little closer.

Don’t forget about the white space
When designing a website or a flyer you hear about white space. That’s the blank area between graphics or text. Not only does the emptiness highlight what it surrounds, that white space is also the area where your eyes and mind get to take a break. Without a break between notes in music all you’ve got is continuous noise.

We can appreciate the importance of white space in what we see and hear, but sometimes we don’t realize that our days also need some white space. A break from constant thinking and planning. It doesn’t have to be long, five or ten minutes of mental white space every hour or two gives new ideas a place to land away from the constant bustle of everything else. New ideas and fresh thoughts are small sips from the motivational cup.

Who else are you benefiting?
When you first set out to achieve your goals who did you think the results would benefit? Yourself? Your family? As you went along and started making progress did what you were doing end up touching others? Were you able to help others achieve their goals? Were you able to teach them anything? Hire them? Inspire them? Did that inspire you to try even harder?

Sometimes we lose track of how much our own lives touch the lives of others. If you feel your motivation flagging, sometimes remembering the ways you’re helping others is just the thing to bring you back on course.

Remember to praise yourself
It’s easy to dwell on the things we didn’t get right in a day or a week or a month. To think about the clients we didn’t close, the meetings we didn’t get, but probably right along with things that didn’t go the way you wanted, plenty of things did go exactly as or better than planned. Taking the time to remember those things at the end of each day or the end of each week is a way to remind yourself that you are on track. Things are going as planned and you are fully capable of following through on your goals and reaching that destination.
